The Birth of 'Round the Houses Motorsport in Australia
Albany 1936 – 1940
The country town of Albany, located on the South West coast of Western Australia, burst onto the motor racing scene in 1936 and created shock waves around Australia.
The birth of round the houses-style motorsport caused a revolution. For the first time, motor racing went to the people. A crowd of more than 10,000 lined the streets to witness the 25 lap event run over a 4km circuit that wound its way through the main streets of the town.
The cars were exciting and often exotic with some of the fastest cars in Australia appearing at the circuit.
Published to mark the 70th anniversary of the event in 2006, this booklet tells the story of the first five years of racing at Albany from the first momentous event in 1936 to the wartime race of 1940. Illustrated with action packed photographs of the event, it relives the glory days of open wheeled racing in country Western Australia.
